dc.description.abstract | Binahong and Brotowali are plants that to control diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes
mellitus is a type of chronic disease in the digestive system characterized by high
glucose levels. The main enzyme that plays a role in carbohydrate metabolism is αglucosidase.
One therapeutic approach is to delay the absorption of glucose into the
blood, by inhibiting the activity of the α-glucosidase enzyme. The aim of this study were
to determine whether the extracts of binahong leaves, brotowali stems and their
combination have activity to inhibit the α -glucosidase enzyme. The simplicia of
binahong leaves and brotowali stems were macerated using 96% ethanol for 3x24
hours. The resulting binahong leaf and brotowali stem extracts were respectively tested
for α -glucosidase activity inhibition with acarbose as a comparison. This research
demonstrated the inhibition of α-glucosidase activity of both extracts with IC50 values of
binahong leaf extract and brotowali stem extract which were 26,63+3,36 g/mL and
29,30+1,48 g/mL, respectively. In the combination of binahong and brotowali extracts
with various ratios (1:1. 1:2 and 2:1), the best combination ratio was obtained in the
ratio of binahong leaf and brotowali stem extracts 2:1 with the highest % inhibition
value was 91,26%. Extracts from binahong leaves and brotowali stems have potential as
α-glucosidase inhibitors in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. | en_US |
